- Contribute insights to strategy discussions and support efforts that drive a high‑quality, strategically aligned pipeline.
- Evaluate strategic fit, capabilities, and market positioning of potential targets.
- Contribute insights to M&A strategy discussions and periodic business reviews with senior leadership.
- Assist in advancing priority opportunities from initial evaluation into execution.
- Independently lead scans within assigned geos or segments to identify attractive companies aligned to IBM Consulting's strategic priorities.
- Validate strategic fit and interest for potential targets with business leaders, maintaining curated lists of top companies in each focus area.
- Conduct preliminary assessments to determine whether opportunities should progress to execution.
- Support timely triage of inbound opportunities to ensure rapid and informed decision‑making.
- Maintain organized documentation and assessments across assigned spaces.
- Develop outreach strategies for prioritized companies in partnership with Corporate Development and business leaders.
- Support introductory meetings with target companies, contributing to assessments of strategic alignment.
- Prepare briefing materials, meeting prep, and debrief summaries.
- Review sponsor portfolios and deal activity to help identify new bankers or private equity firms that can expand deal flow.
- Support development of market points of view and projects that shape inorganic investment direction.
- Contribute to the creation of multi‑acquisition strategies within priority areas.
- Apply structured analytical frameworks to evaluate market attractiveness, strategic fit, and high‑level value potential.
- Facilitate coordination between geo teams, domain leaders, offering teams, and Corporate Development to progress opportunities.
- Deliver meeting prep materials and lead prep discussions that align stakeholders on objectives and next steps.
- Influence internal partners to shape and advance strategic opportunities.
- Ensure accurate and timely updates in pipeline tools and research platforms, including Dealspace and Grata.
- Identify and implement process improvements that enhance team efficiency, including the adoption of GenAI or agent‑enabled workflows.
- Help refine internal tooling, templates, and workflows to improve consistency and speed.
This job can be performed from anywhere in the US.
Your role and responsibilities
As Strategy & Origination Managing Consultant you will help shape and advance our inorganic growth agenda. In this role, you will independently lead market scans, validate priority targets, and guide early‑stage opportunity development within a geo or strategic segment. You will collaborate closely with leaders across Consulting and Corporate Development to turn market insights into actionable M&A pipeline opportunities.

Required technical and professional expertise
- Experience in strategy consulting, corporate development, investment research, or similar roles involving market analysis or early‑stage deal evaluation.
- Strong analytical skills with the ability to conduct market scans, evaluate companies, and synthesize insights into clear recommendations.
- Demonstrated ability to independently manage workstreams and lead various assessments.
- Experience engaging professionally with external teams and senior executives.
- Familiarity with M&A processes, strategic evaluation frameworks, and the early stages of deal origination.
- Strong organizational skills, attention to detail, and ability to manage multiple priorities.
- Curiosity, adaptability, and comfort working in a dynamic, fast‑moving environment.
- Openness to adopting GenAI‑enabled research and productivity tools to accelerate analysis and workflows.
Preferred technical and professional experience
• M&A Strategy Development: Experience with creating and updating strategy content for M&A purposes, including analyzing market trends and competitor activity to inform business decisions.
• Business Unit Collaboration: Experience collaborating with various business units to achieve shared goals, including driving execution on cross-unit projects and ensuring timely and effective delivery.
