You will be partnering with data engineers and NFT SREs in support of NF Data Operations. Leverage AI tools to help close observability gaps within codebases across IDS.
Technical skills:
- Data Engineering: Hands on experience with Database Platforms like Oracle, Snowflake and Postgres. Knowledge of UAC, DPA, SQL tuning opportunities. Experience with ETL development tools like Informatica and/or Python. Knowledge of CI/CD Pipelines, Kubernetes, and modern techniques like streaming is a plus.
- Observability: Strong knowledge of observability and alerting tools like New Relic and Splunk, build monitoring dashboards and partner with engineers to work on self-healing opportunities. Partner with S&I DBAs and SREs to enable meaningful database alerting. Partner with NF Data Flow monitoring to ensure proper alerts are in place to avoid human detected incidents.
- Performance Optimization : Experience with tuning and optimization of applications including SQL performance, ETL performance and Cloud native platform optimizations.
- Security & Compliance: Understanding of best practices and compliance requirements.
- Incident Management: Knowledge of incident management and on-call practices, support data operations on incident calls, participate in RCAs, and help to close resulting PTASKs.
- Critical thinking: Critical thinking and problem-solving skills, especially under pressure or during incidents.
- Outcome driven: Ability to formulate innovative ideas and execute them to achieve outcomes.
- Collaboration: Excellent collaboration skills to work effectively with cross-functional teams.
- Continuous improvement: Proven track record of driving continuous improvements with a focus on operational resiliency.
Nice to Have:
- Nationwide Financial or similar experience is a plus.
- Certificates like AWS Certified DevOps Engineer, AWS Certified Developer, Certified Kubernetes Application Developer are a plus.

The Site Reliability Engineer (SRE) works across teams to build and operate highly reliable systems while minimizing restrictions on release velocity. You’ll take a broad view and respond strategically to problems with a focus on reliability and member experience. As an SRE, you’ll spend at least 50% of your time developing software to improve observability and reliability.
You’ll help Nationwide protect our members by ensuring the availability and performance of our critical systems and by ensuring our product teams achieve and maintain high standards of quality and efficiency. With your understanding and work across value streams, from user-facing applications to underlying platforms, you’ll partner with numerous development and infrastructure teams to solve challenging problems with impact across Nationwide
Job Description
Key Responsibilities:
- Uses automation as a primary tool, monitoringthe user experience, respondsto moderate production incidents,conducts postmortemsand acts to prevent recurrence of known problems.
- Responsible for applying secure software and systems engineering practices throughout the delivery lifecycle to ensure our data and technology solutions are protected from threats and vulnerabilities.
- Diagnosesavailability, latency and performance issues; makingimprovements in code and configuration to achieve service level objectives efficiently at scalewith minimal human intervention.
- Works with leaders to influenceandguideproduct teamstoimplement SRE principles and practices.
- Creates and executes tools to automatetoiland improve the reliability of Nationwide’s systems.
- Supports Nationwide services in production as part of a24x7 on-call rotation.
- Works with architects & engineers to “designreliability in” to new and existing systems.
- Works to ensure reliable interactions between Nationwide systems and Software as a Service (SaaS) providers through engineering and relationship management.
Reporting Relationships: Reports to AVP, Director, Technology Engineering Manager/Technology Product Manager.
Typical Skills and Experiences:
Education: Undergraduate studies in computer science, management information systems or a related field is preferred.
License/Certification/Designation: Technology certifications or designation are not required, but encouraged (i.e., AWS, Azure, Scripting and Development Languages, Delivery Methods, Security).
Experience: Six years or more of technology experiencewith system management, most complex system design and using multiple technologies within one or more domains. Proven experience with CI/CD, infrastructure as code and other modern IT practices, with at least five years of experiencebuildingand operating complex distributed systems. Experience modifying codeand configurationsto improve availability, latency and performancewith a systematic problem-solving approach coupled with effective communication skills and a sense of drive.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Strong communication and negotiation skills, knowledge of planning, management and execution of Accelerated Solutions Deliver framework, Information Security acumen. Vendor management skills preferred Insurance/financial services industry knowledge a plus.
Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.
Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the Vice President and HR Business Partner.

Working Conditions: Normal office environment. Non-standard or extended work may be required based on project needs. Some travel may be required.

The expected starting salary range for Consultant, Site Reliability Engineer : $118,000.00 - $178,000.00
