Your role and responsibilities
Providers are central to the experience of using Terraform day-to-day. The critical promise Terraform makes to its customers is that the experience of using these providers will be excellent, because to them, that is synonymous with the experience of using Terraform as a whole.
We are looking for an Engineering Manager who will lead a team focused on Terraform provider enablement. Our customers are provider authors and contributors, both internal (HashiCorp), external (open source community, cloud vendors, contractors), and our technology partners which may contain elements of both. Our team leads the research into and enrichment of the development experience of building, documenting, and releasing Terraform providers. This involves working on our frameworks and SDKs, but also researching and identifying ways in which we can help Terraform provider developers do their work more quickly or easily. We develop tools to help provider developers maintain, develop, and release Terraform providers, such as scripts to generate providers, CLI utilities, and tooling or testing capabilities as it relates to maintaining providers over time, such as breaking change detection for pull requests. We also collaborate with the Education & Product Marketing teams to create workshops, guides, best practices, and reference documentation for provider developers.
At HashiCorp, an IBM Company, we view management and technical leadership as two tracks, with a highly technical background being a requirement for both. This role is uniquely technical given the deeply infrastructure-related nature of the product. Given this unique situation, it is expected that applicants would be comfortable covering a mix of functions. In order of priority, this would include people management and coaching, product alignment, and technical guidance. We do not expect everyone to have industry experience in all things we do today. However, we do expect candidates to have deep understanding of the software development lifecycle, concise communication skills, proven track record in cross-functional collaboration, and a willingness to pivot and pick up new skills quickly.
Come join us and help strengthen the Terraform provider ecosystem!
What you'll do (responsibilities)
Support the career growth and morale of a team of skilled software engineers at varying skill levels, through setting goals, mentoring, and providing feedback
Lean on technical background to guide design and architecture conversations between engineers to a clear outcome
Collaborate with Product and Design partners to prioritize and scope work, contribute to strategy, vision, and roadmap discussions, and play an active role in quarterly planning and estimation
Effectively triage incoming work requests from a variety of internal and external sources, ensuring the work most aligned with the team's objectives is handled
Continuously evaluate and improve processes, tools, and workflows to increase efficiency, collaboration, and output
Required education
High School Diploma/GED
Preferred education
Bachelor's Degree
Required technical and professional expertise
2+ years of experience in a direct people management role for a software engineering team
5 years of hands-on software engineering experience
Strong communication skills (both written and verbal) and experience managing a remote distributed team
A successful track record of facilitating the growth and learning of others
Enough technical knowledge to take in highly complex, deeply technical concepts and relay them to stakeholders in a comprehensible way
Experience navigating and managing projects spanning multiple codebases and organizations with separate ownership
Passion for fostering a positive team culture and driving innovation while maintaining a strong focus on operational reliability
Preferred technical and professional experience
Cursory knowledge of Terraform and providers is a plus
Interest in open source, community management, and developer advocacy
Passion for delivering delightful user experiences and a background that includes building developer tools
