Position Summary, Duties and Responsibilities
The Water Tai Chi Instructor is responsible for leading safe, engaging, and accessible Water Tai Chi classes for participants of varying ages and fitness levels. This position fosters a positive aquatic environment that supports participant wellness, mobility, balance, and relaxation. The instructor will represent the recreation program with professionalism, inclusivity, and enthusiasm.
Key Responsibilities
- Plan and lead Water Tai Chi classes that focus on proper technique, mindful movement, breathing, balance, and gentle aquatic exercise.
- Teach in a manner that prioritizes participant safety in the pool environment, offering modifications and support for all ability levels.
- Provide clear demonstrations, verbal cues, and guidance to promote participant confidence and progress.
- Create a welcoming, encouraging, and community-oriented class atmosphere.
- Arrive prepared and on time for all scheduled classes.
- Ensure the pool area is set up appropriately and kept orderly before and after each session.
- Maintain accurate attendance records and follow all facility aquatic policies and safety procedures.
- Report any incidents, injuries, or equipment concerns to the Recreation Manager promptly.
- Stay current on Water Tai Chi instruction methods, aquatic safety standards, and best practices.
Requirements
Job Qualifications
- Must be 18 years old.
- Strong understanding of safe movement practices and body alignment.
- CPR/AED and First Aid certification (or willingness to obtain).
- Excellent communication, interpersonal, and motivational skills.
- Ability to work with participants of diverse ages, backgrounds, and fitness levels.
Education and Experience
- No education requirement - All levels welcome
- Prior experience teaching Tai Chi or equivalent training in Tai Chi principles and movement.
Preferred Qualifications
- Certification in Tai Chi instruction or related mind–body disciplines.
- Experience within a community recreation or fitness center environment.
Work Environment
- Indoor aquatic facility setting.
- Requires the ability to demonstrate movement in shallow water, stand for extended periods, and safely assist participants as needed.
- Must be comfortable working in a warm-water pool environment.
- The position may involve exposure to cleaning chemicals, chemically treated water, or other environmental irritants.
Physical Activities:
- Requires the ability to demonstrate movement, stand for extended periods, and assist participants safely.
- Ability to lift, carry, push, or pull objects and equipment weighing up to 50 lbs.
