Operations / Production Manager — CNC Machine Shop
Position Summary
The Operations / Production Manager is responsible for leading daily manufacturing operations within a CNC machine shop to ensure safety, quality, delivery, and cost objectives are achieved. This role oversees production planning, staffing, equipment utilization, continuous improvement initiatives, and cross-functional coordination to support customer requirements and company growth. The position serves as a key leader driving operational performance, accountability, and a culture of continuous improvement.
Key Responsibilities
Production & Operations Management
Direct and oversee daily CNC machining operations including milling, turning, secondary operations, and finishing.
Ensure production schedules are executed efficiently while meeting customer delivery commitments.
Monitor workflow, capacity, and machine utilization to maximize productivity.
Coordinate priorities with Planning, Quality, Engineering, and Shipping departments.
Develop and maintain production metrics (OEE, throughput, on-time delivery, scrap rates, etc.).
Leadership & Team Development
Lead, mentor, and develop supervisors, leads, and production personnel.
Establish clear performance expectations and accountability.
Drive a culture focused on safety, teamwork, and continuous improvement.
Conduct regular performance reviews and provide coaching and corrective action when necessary.
Support hiring, onboarding, and workforce planning.
Quality & Compliance
Ensure production processes meet customer specifications and quality standards.
Partner with Quality to maintain compliance with applicable standards (e.g., ISO 9001, ISO 13485, AS9100 if applicable).
Support root cause analysis and corrective action activities for nonconformances.
Promote mistake-proofing and standardized work practices.
Process Improvement & Efficiency
Lead lean manufacturing and continuous improvement initiatives.
Identify and eliminate bottlenecks, waste, and inefficiencies.
Improve setup reduction, tool management, and machining efficiency.
Implement best practices for process control and operational consistency.
Safety & Equipment Management
Ensure compliance with all safety policies and OSHA requirements.
Oversee machine maintenance coordination and preventative maintenance adherence.
Maintain clean, organized, and efficient production areas (5S / 6S).
Planning & Communication
Participate in production meetings and provide clear communication of priorities.
Collaborate with sales and customer service on capacity planning and delivery commitments.
Provide operational reporting to senior leadership including KPIs and improvement actions.
Qualifications
Bachelor's degree in Manufacturing, Engineering, Operations Management, or equivalent experience preferred.
5+ years of leadership experience in a CNC machining or precision manufacturing environment.
Strong understanding of CNC machining processes (milling, turning, tooling, setup reduction).
Experience with ERP/MRP systems and production scheduling.
Demonstrated experience leading teams in a fast-paced manufacturing environment.
Knowledge of lean manufacturing principles and continuous improvement methods.
Strong problem-solving, decision-making, and organizational skills.
Preferred Experience
Experience in high-mix / low-volume or precision manufacturing environments.
Familiarity with regulated industries such as medical, aerospace, or defense.
Exposure to ISO-certified quality systems.
Experience managing multi-shift operations.
