Job Description Summary
Do you want to help people protect their pet’s health and their financial freedom to take care of them? We are the first and largest pet health insurer in the United States, and we’re looking for the best people to help us on our way to protecting the health of our next million pets!
As the AVP, you’ll report directly to the Chief Pet Officer and be instrumental in the company’s future vision, strategies, policies, associate engagement and achievement of revenue and profitability targets to protect long-term viability and drive rapid growth. You’ll be responsible for the successful performance of a team that will develop and implement sales programs, including partner relations, integration and service delivery.
Job Description
Key Responsibilities:
- Partners with the executive team to develop and execute the business’ short- and long-term strategy and operating plan and to create product and channel performance expectations. Key member of the Chief Pet Officer’s cabinet, providing leadership, perspective, expertise, and accountability for the success of the business.
- Responsible for overall revenue performance of the Pet Organization, including all new business, referrals, retention, and revenue-generating partnerships. This includes but is not limited to Petinsurance.com, inside Sales (call center), and intermediated channels.
- Sets the strategic direction for the sales channels with a focus on sustainable, profitable growth and competitive advantage.
- Accountable for relationship management of Pet’s Voluntary Benefit brokers/employers/platforms, Member & Specialty Groups, Independent Agents & Advisor partnerships. Responsible for developing and enhancing industry relationships and positively contributing to Nationwide’s brand and reputation.
- Develops needed capabilities and resources to deliver on growth and profitability targets through current and future sales teams and intermediary partner channels. Creates business cases to gain commitments, develop roadmaps, makes and communicates decisions, and adjusts as needed to execute with speed and precision.
- Creates innovative ways to use data, research, and partner feedback to uncover business-driving trends, patterns, and profitable growth opportunities, including partner messaging, processes and product solutions to be the pet carrier “partner of choice”.
- Deliver strategic solutions, compensation, KPIs and service governance for partner platform integrations, including TPAs, HRIS, benefit exchanges and all other benefit administration systems.
- Establishes market presence/brand and creates Pet’s identity within the marketplace. Negotiates deal terms and create long-term value with current and new sales channel partners.
- Designs key performance indicators, reporting and variable compensation programs to drive exceptional results from sales teams.
- Builds high-performing, accountable sales teams, including hiring and developing sales leadership talent, based on established core competencies needed to execute short and long-term objectives. Drives top quartile engagement within team.
Reporting Relationships: Reports to SVP, Nationwide Pet. Manages a team of 4 or more direct reports and 100+ indirect reports.
Typical Skills and Experiences:
Education: Bachelor's degree, preferably in a Business, Marketing, or related field. Advanced degree a plus.
Experience: Typically 10+ years of professional experience leading high performing sales organizations, ideally in complex and dynamic environment like insurance, with proven success of sales team enablement and partner program management.
Knowledge, Abilities and Skills: Proven ability to operate within a matrix environment, collaborate with various stakeholders in different functions effectively and manage multiple priorities simultaneously. Demonstrated success providing strategic leadership; strong ability to inform with data and influence key stakeholders and senior leadership. Extensive knowledge of sales teams and intermediary channel partners with experience deploying new products, including RFPs and business case development. Proven knowledge of customer and market dynamics within the business-to-business sector; ability to design key performance indicators for sales organizations and structure programs/products that meet the partner and their client’s needs. An effective communicator, motivating leader, who can guide teams to success, even in the face of adversity.
Other criteria, including leadership skills, competencies and experiences may take precedence.
Staffing exceptions to the above must be approved by the hiring manager’s leader and HR Business Partner.

Working Conditions: Normal home office environment. Leads a virtual team, with significant travel required.
