Description
Under the direction of the Senior Services Coordinator, the driver is responsible for safely transporting trip participants to and from assigned destinations while providing excellent customer service, assisting and supervising patrons on trips, conducting bus inspections, as well as providing feedback to supervisory staff.

Requirements
TYPICAL QUALIFICATIONS:
KNOWLEDGE: Rules and regulations for transporting participants including laws relating to the operation of motor vehicles; customer service and techniques for working with older adults and persons with disabilities in a recreation setting; knowledge of the Denver Metro Area and primary locations within it.
SKILL: Operate a 15-passenger vehicle that is equipped with a wheelchair lift; correctly and completely secure wheelchairs in bus and operate wheelchair lift; enforce seat belt rules and apply all applicable laws for the safe operation of city vehicles. Able to safely secure participant equipment or supplies before moving vehicle; exercise sound judgment in determining if weather conditions are safe for travel; exercise sound judgment and decision-making and operate within set boundaries and guidelines and complete reports at the end of trips.
ABILITY: Take responsibility for safety of self, others, materials and equipment; direct the attention of participants and communicate clear and concise directions and guidelines. Able to handle emergency and non-emergency situations per established guidelines and policies.
EXPERIENCE: High school diploma or GED. Must be 21 years of age or older. Minimum of 1 year experience operating vehicles and performing duties similar to the essential functions of this position.
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS: The following duties are illustrative only and are not intended to be all inclusive:
Driving Duties:
- Drive a city vehicle, such as a 15-passenger vehicle on trips as assigned in a variety of weather conditions, during both daytime and nighttime hours, including driving in mountainous areas.
- Bring the vehicle to a complete, full stop and set parking brake before allowing passengers to disembark. Assist participants in and out of bus as needed.
- Supervise and assist patrons on trips/tours/hikes or activities. Attend and participate at venues with group and assist as need with tasks or logistics such as ticketing, check-in, and communication regarding departure times or other trip related tasks. Follow specific trip plans and ensure established policies and procedures for the safety and well-being of trip participants are followed.
- Pick up, return, clean and fuel bus per City of Lafayette procedures.
- Use of digital or paper maps and follow written and verbal instructions to locate and arrive at correct designations on time. Drivers are required to review the route and directions for all trips, including return routes, prior to departure.
- Manage trip timelines to adhere to admission times, reservations, deadlines, tour schedules, and departure times.
Administrative Duties:
- Complete written reports of each trip. Provide feedback to staff regarding trips and make suggestions for improvement.
- Complete accident and incident reports when applicable per established policies and procedures
- Distribute program evaluations.
Other Duties:
- Handle and report any problems or emergency situations that arise involving the city vehicle and trip according to established processes and guidelines.
- While performing job duties, take proper safety precautions, anticipate unsafe circumstances and act accordingly to prevent accidents. Responsible for safety of self, others, materials and equipment.
- Support individuals with assistive medical equipment, if needed. Take responsibility for the safe operation of a wheelchair lift and wheelchair restraints located in some vehicles.
- Provide excellent customer service, actively engage with participants, and represent the City of Lafayette in a positive professional manner in all situations.
- Perform related work as assigned by supervisor.
SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
- Must have a current, valid regular driver license; must maintain a safe driving record.
- Must pass a background check.
- Upon hire, Completion of approved driver training course; approved training in working with people with disabilities in a recreational setting including use of the wheelchair lift.
- Must possess or obtain CPR/AED/first aid certification upon hire or prior to first assigned trip.
This position will be required to undergo pre-employment drug testing upon a conditional offer being made.
