We have a dynamic role as Deputy Director of Utilities & Public Works for the City of Camden, serving in a vital leadership capacity to support the Director in the strategic planning, oversight, and daily management of essential municipal services. This role oversees and coordinates operations across a broad range of departments, including water, wastewater, sewer, storm water, sanitation, electric, streets, parks, and garage services. The Deputy Director ensures adherence to city policies and safety standards, responds to citizen inquiries, assists with budget development and financial oversight, and ensures timely and accurate reporting. The ideal candidate will have a strong background in electric utilities and public works operations, preferably with a bachelor’s degree, along with at least five years of supervisory experience. Exceptional leadership, communication, and organizational skills are essential, as is a comprehensive understanding of municipal infrastructure, regulatory compliance, budgeting, and procurement. The position also requires proficiency in operating standard equipment, balancing multiple priorities, and working effectively in a dynamic, service-oriented environment. Requirements
Preferred Bachelors degree in engineering, environmental or related field with a minimum of five years supervisory experience in utilities and public works operations (significant other relevant experience will also be considered). The City of Camden operates as an electricity - any previous experience in electric distribution systems is a definite plus.
- On a daily basis, supervises, coordinates and directs all activities, operations and personnel of the Utilities and Public Works Department, which involves instructing, assigning, reviewing and planning work of others, coordinating activities, maintaining standards, allocating personnel, acting on employee problems, selecting new employees, and recommending transfers/promotions, disciplinary actions, discharges and salary increases.
- Assists in the implementation of various programs and divisions of the department to include electric, garage, parks, traffic control, streets, storm water, sanitation, recycling, water, wastewater and sewer.
- Provides technical assistance to the Director and enforces all departmental and City rules and procedural regulations regarding safe working conditions.
- Responds to citizen inquiries and complaints. Must enjoy working with the public and improving City service levels.
- Assists with the development and implementation of the annual departmental budget and control of expenditures.
- Receives, prepares, reviews, and submits various reports and records including vehicle maintenance reports, architectural drawings, landscape design, time sheets, plant inventory, performance evaluations, and other business related documentation.
- Embrace, implement, and utilize technologies to make the utility more efficient.
- Job is on-site every day in an office environment with periodic field trips to project sites and meetings.
