Join the Oregon Public Defense Commission as a Deputy Defender
The Oregon Public Defense Commission (OPDC) is seeking dedicated, skilled attorneys to join our team as Deputy Defenders. In this role, you will represent individuals facing criminal charges at every stage of the case, from initial appearance and release advocacy through motions practice, trial, and sentencing. Deputy Defenders work closely with clients, investigators, and support staff to provide client-centered, high-quality legal representation and to protect the constitutional rights of people who cannot afford counsel. As a Deputy Defender, you will work alongside passionate advocates committed to upholding constitutional rights, shaping fair legal outcomes, and advancing the integrity of our public defense system. Position Details:
Location: Portland and Oregon City (NW), Salem (Central), & Medford (South)
Salary Range: $106,104 – $141,600

This recruitment may be used to fill current and future vacancies within OPDC as they occur.
Key Responsibilities:
Provide court-appointed legal representation and advocacy to indigent clients charged with criminal offenses in Oregon circuit courts.
Represent clients from arraignment through trial and post-trial motions.
Occasionally represent clients in pre-indictment proceedings.
Manage a diverse criminal caseload that may include probation violations, misdemeanors, contempt matters, felonies, extradition proceedings, and other adjudications that are directly related to these matters.
Minimum Qualifications:
Graduation from an accredited law school AND member of the Oregon State Bar or eligible for membership through reciprocity or a program approved by the Oregon State Bar AND meets the Attorney Qualification Standards for Criminal Attorney 1, 2, 3, 4, or 5 AND a Valid Oregon Driver's license.
