Position OverviewPosition Overview:
The Career Advisor Senior in the University Career Center (UCC) acts as a student connector to align resources and services, educational programming, and information about experiential learning and employment opportunities for KU students. This is a creative and dynamic position well suited for student-focused collaborators who are seeking a position that integrates direct student support and academic program connections that align to enhance student engagement and career success.
This position will provide support for either of these Student Pathways: Languages and Cultures or Business, Communication and Leadership. The Student Pathways program is KU's comprehensive service model that provides a continuity of academic and career advising services that meets students where they enter and sets them on a path of early engagement to ensure consistent career preparation throughout their academic journey.
Unit Overview:
The University Career Center is part of the Career and Experiential Learning team within Academic Success at KU along with Center for Undergraduate Research, Center for Service Learning, the Office of Fellowships, and the Office of Academic Programs & Experiential Learning.
Academic Success Overview:
Academic Success advocates for and strategically advances education at the University of Kansas. We walk with students from orientation to graduation, providing them with high-quality, data-driven academic and career advising, targeted academic support systems and networks, and empowering and engaging experiential learning. We serve the university, coordinating with faculty, staff, and students throughout KU to further educational initiatives and strategic goals. Our units include University Academic Support Centers, Centers for Orientation and Academic Advising Programs, Career and Experiential Learning and Student Success Initiatives.
Job Description
60% - Career Advising
- Advise students interested in career development, planning and implementation process through individual and group appointments.
- Document career advising sessions and provide accurate data for ongoing assessment initiatives using university approved systems and adhering to FERPA guidelines.
- Develop and/or refine career advising materials to enhance student engagement and learning in advising sessions.
- Create and deliver career workshops and programs based on student and campus partners' needs and UCC strategic priorities.
- Develop a strong understanding of the developmental needs and concerns of college students.
- Stay up to date on career advising best practices on cultivating career discovery and career readiness.
- Maintain knowledge of changes in the workplace and economic outlook as they impact students' career choices, preparation, job search and employment.
- Design and coordinate a suite of services, programs, and resources to increase campus-wide networking and occupational exploration programs for students in assigned Student Pathway.
- Work collaboratively with Jayhawk Academic Advising Student Pathway team members to support student engagement in the opportunities related to each pathway.
- Foster strong partnerships with campus community, employers and alumni on projects that support the career development and planning needs for KU students in assigned Student Pathway.
- Develop and disseminate specific knowledge about career paths related to assigned Student Pathway which includes managing a newsletter and other relevant student engagement strategies.
- Oversee assigned programs that support the central function of the University Career Center, such as student organization outreach, staffing information tabling, reviewing content for Canvas sites/website.
- Work alongside UCC operations staff to meet UCC strategic priorities.
- Support and staff relevant campus career fairs and networking events.
- Understand and adhere to FERPA guidelines, KU policies and other institutional compliance expectations.
- Attend relevant unit meetings.
- Participate in department and campus meetings and trainings.
- Participate in relevant professional development annually.
- Other duties assigned by University Career Center Program Director.
Position Requirements
- This position is an on-campus position due to the student-facing service nature of the position. Hybrid work arrangements up to 2-days a week remote are available to this position.
Required Qualifications
- Bachelor's degree with a minimum of three (3) years of relevant experience OR Master's degree with one (1) year of experience.
- One (1) year of teaching, training, public speaking or group facilitation experience.
- Excellent written communication skills as demonstrated by application materials.
This position requires a formal degree in the cited discipline area(s) to ensure that candidates have advanced knowledge, analytical skills and professional competencies necessary to perform the duties of the position. The level of degree is commonly recognized as the standard qualification for similar roles in the public and private sector, ensuring that the university remains competitive with industry aligned practices, enhances collaboration with external partners, and supports the delivery of services and programs that meet professional and market-driven expectations.
