Description
Program Description: Binder Park Zoo is offering a one-year clinical Zoological Medicine Veterinary Fellowship position. The Animal Health team at Binder Park Zoo employs one full time veterinarian and one full time licensed veterinary technician. The fellow will participate in all aspect of the veterinary care including; anesthesia, examinations, diagnostics, treatment plans, preventative medicine, surgery, record keeping, etc. The fellow will travel to Potter Park Zoo each week (1-2 days) for additional experience. The fellow will be encouraged to complete at least one original study and submit at least one publication in a peer-reviewed journal. Opportunities exist for collaboration with other regional zoos, Department of Natural Resources, and with Michigan State University College of Veterinary Medicine and Veterinary Diagnostic Laboratory. They will be expected to participate in ACZM prep topic rounds and journal club and attend the Mid-West Regional Zoo Vet meetings. This fellowship will provide the necessary experience for a person to pursue a zoological residency or obtain a clinical position at a zoo. Excellent organizational, communication and interpersonal skills and the ability to work as an educator and team member are a must. The fellow will be a full-time salaried employee with benefits at Binder Park Zoo. This position requires at least 40 hours of work per week. The fellow must be available to share on-call emergency coverage for weekends, holidays and evenings and routine schedule may include working one weekend day a week. The fellow will assist the zoo in the accomplishment of their missions to connect people with nature and inspire them to conserve through managing all aspects of animal health and research in cooperation with the zoo’s management staff.

Salary/Benefits: $43,000 a year (eligible for health benefits after 90 days of active employment)

Requirements
Experience required: DVM degree from an accredited university, license to practice veterinary medicine in the state of Michigan. Applicants should have a minimum of one-year post-graduate experience in small, large or exotic clinical setting (either internship or private practice). Possess a valid Michigan driver’s license or obtain within 90 days of active employment. Up-to-date vaccinations for tetanus and rabies required and Tb negative test results within past 6 months.
