Description
Ballyhack Golf Club is seeking a highly motivated leader to join our management team.Located in the scenic Blue Ridge Mountains of Roanoke, Virginia, Ballyhack offers breathtaking views and a world-class golf experience. Construction of the course began in 2007 and was completed in 2009. Designed by renowned golf course architect Lester George, Ballyhack sits on approximately 200 acres and delivers a true Scottish links-style golf experience.
The course features:
- 37 acres of 007 bentgrass fairways
- 3.5 acres of 007 bentgrass tees
- 4.5 acres of Tyee bentgrass greens
- Kentucky bluegrass/turf-type tall fescue roughs
- Extensive fine fescue native areas throughout the property
Ballyhack's state-of-the-art agronomy facility was constructed in 2018 and officially opened in January 2019, reflecting the club's continued commitment to excellence in course conditions and operations.
Currently ranked #210 in the United States by Golf Digest for 2025 and recognized as the #5 course in Virginia, Ballyhack has established itself as one of the premier private golf destinations in the country.
In 2016, Ballyhack became part of the Dormie Network and has since continued investing in infrastructure and member experience throughout the property. The club currently offers 60 guest accommodations across 15 cottages and serves a large national membership base.
This is an exciting opportunity for a driven professional to join a passionate team dedicated to delivering exceptional golf and hospitality experiences.
ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS
Responsibilities include, but are not limited to:
- Direct and implement policies and procedures established by Dormie Network
- Supervises and manages the upkeep of the golf course property which includes the course, maintenance equipment, golf car fleet, recreations facilities, open spaces, wooded areas, and unused acreage.
- Supervise crews performing daily maintenance and special projects
- Assist with manual labor and project work as needed
- Train equipment operators on proper operation and care of mowing and maintenance equipment
- Supervise pesticide applications and calibrate application equipment as needed
- Assist in operation and maintenance of irrigation systems, pumps, and drainage systems
- Hire, train, and mentor department staff
- Monitor maintenance schedules and daily operations
- Ensure compliance with purchasing policies and procedures
- Maintain a strong understanding of the game of golf and course conditioning standards
- Adhere to all Dormie Network policies and procedures
- Maintain a professional appearance and positive attitude at all times
- Provide exceptional hospitality to members, guests, and fellow employees
KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Qualified candidates should possess:
- Strong working knowledge of golf course maintenance practices, including:
- Turfgrass management for greens, tees, and fairways
- Irrigation and drainage systems
- Fertilizer and soil conditioning practices
- Herbicide and pest control methods
- Ornamental plant and tree care
- Excellent leadership, organizational, and communication skills
- Strong administrative, decision-making, and problem-solving abilities
- Knowledge of applicable federal, state, and local regulations
- Ability to operate and maintain golf course maintenance equipment
- Ability to prioritize tasks and delegate responsibilities effectively
- Ability to work independently and in a fast-paced environment
- Strong attention to detail and recordkeeping skills
- Ability to maintain confidentiality of sensitive information
SUPERVISORY RESPONSIBILITIES
- Oversee daily operations of the department and lead maintenance staff
Educational & Experience Requirements
- 2- or 4-year degree in Turfgrass Management or a related field
- Minimum of 3 years of industry experience in a leadership role
- Virginia pesticide license, or the ability to obtain one
Physical Requirements
- Prolonged periods of standing and walking
- Ability to work on uneven terrain
- Ability to bend, crouch, stretch, push, pull, and lift as necessary
- Ability to lift and carry up to 50 pounds
- Ability to visually inspect course conditions, machinery, and materials
- Ability to operate maintenance equipment and machinery
- Ability to communicate effectively with staff and members
- Ability to operate computers and standard office equipment
